Fine Art Friday – Russian Orthodox/Vatican Style…

... The Vatican's newest official court artist, Natalia Tsarkova, poses next to a painting of Pope Benedict XVI in her studio by Rome. From Art Daily; ROME (AFP).- After Michelangelo and Raphael, the vatican's latest official painter is something of an unusual choice -- an ebullient Russian woman with a pet owl who is a regular at the court of cardinals and popes. An Orthodox believer in the heart of Roman Catholicism, Natalia Tsarkova paints her classical-style portraits in a flat filled … [Read more...]

Beauty In Various Forms…

... Orlande de Lassus's Media Vita, as described by my friend, Colin; "(Lassus) is darker than the brightness of Palestrina, so that his bright moments sparkle out of the darkness. It's a chiaroscuro in music - the soundtrack of a Caravaggio painting." The beauty of sound The beauty of sight We adore Thee, O Christ, and bless Thee. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. Spiritual beauty CCC 1466: The confessor is not the master of God's forgiveness, but … [Read more...]

But yeah, … [Read more...]

I just had an Epiphany! Oh, wait. Never mind then…

Adoration of the Magi by Fray Nicols Borrs, c. 1570 ... As someone noted about the arbitrary nature and silliness of moving around feast days for the convenience of the laity, why doesn't the USCCB just go ahead and move Christmas and Ash Wednesday to Sunday and be done with it? This past Christmas made martyrs out of Africans traveling to midnight mass, most traveling many miles on foot at the peril of their own lives, and certain Bishops here want to move things around so Americans won't … [Read more...]
